Market Art Series

For 30 Years I worked in the Leicester Fish Market. I used the Local city market as a source of inspiration for my painting. For instance the act of manipulation between seller and punter, and the role playing this demanded of the market trader and the wealth of character types found in the ordinary people frequenting the market.

This then compelled me to delve further into the psychology and imagery of theatre.

These are just a few of the many sketches, many characters, of which may be found in the low reliefs, drawings and paintings of the market.

The Large works link strongly with the drawings.

The Drinkers

In August 1998 Leicester City Council put on an exhibition of my work at the Newarke Houses Museum to celebrate 700 years of Leicester Market, or the Saturday Shambles, as it was known.
